PLACEMENT AND PROMOTION POLICY

The Placement and Promotion policy at HAZEL McCALLION is based upon the needs and best educational and social interest of the individual student.   Ultimately promotion and placement decisions take into account dialogue with parents, age, ability, attitude, effort and work habits.

SCHOOL LIFE AWARD

Students at Hazel McCallion have the opportunity to earn a School Life Award.   This award is given to students who have made an outstanding contribution to all aspects of school life, through academics, arts/science/technology, sports, and personal development.  Points may also be accumulated for participation in various clubs and extra curricular activities.  Criteria for receiving this award are as follows:  Grade 6 - minimum of 8 points; Grade 7 - minimum of 11 points; Grade 8 - minimum of 12 points.

ATTENDANCE

Regular and punctual attendance are indications of a desirable and productive student.   If you are to achieve success at school you must attend regularly.

LATES

Parents are asked to TELEPHONE the school by 8:30 am. when a child will be late arriving at the school for any reason.  When the student arrives late at the school in the morning or afternoon he/she must report to the office to obtain an ADMIT SLIP.  Accumulated lates will be recorded.  Students will be required to make up time missed in classes.

ABSENCES

Parents are asked to TELEPHONE the school by 9:30 a.m. when a child is not coming to school for any reason.  Students are also asked to present a NOTE to their Home Room Teacher when returning from any absence whether it be sickness, appointment, vacation, etc.  The note should clearly explain the absence and be signed by a parent.  It is important for parents to notify the school if an absence will be for more than TWO days.

LEAVING SCHOOL EARLY

To be excused from school, a student must present a note from their parents explaining the reason(s) for being excused.  The note should be given to the office in the morning.  A DEMIT SLIP is prepared and given to the student for the teacher whose class the student must leave.  Prior to leaving the school, the student MUST report to the office and sign out.  We require the signature of the person taking the child off school property in our sign-out register.

Homework

Homework will become an essential part of a student's life at HAZEL McCALLION.   Parents should expect that students should be doing some type of homework regularly.  Homework can take several different forms:

            - practice
            - review
            - preparation for tests
            - completion of assignments
            - projects
            - updating and completion of notebooks
            - reading for enjoyment or for a particular purpose

As an additional organizational support to you a "Binder Reminder" is provided.  This will help you to better manage your time.  Students are advised to make use of this booklet to record assignments, test dates and important deadlines.   This will permit them to better manage their time.  The School Agenda should be carried to all classes by the Student.

Students who set aside time regularly for homework are usually the most successful.   Parents who have concerns about lack of homework are encouraged to consult with their child's homeroom teacher or counselor.

After absences, students are expected to speak with their teachers in order to catch up on any assignments or tests missed.

If students require assistance in developing a study plan, they are encouraged to discuss this with their homeroom teacher in conjunction with the guidance counselor.

LATE ASSIGNMENT POLICY

Rationale

This policy received direction from School Council, Parent Survey and Staff and Student input.  It reflects the main concerns and ideas from all parties.  In putting this policy into effect it is also understood that there are always circumstances that will generate flexibility on the part of teacher assessment.   Illness, travel and other family contingencies will always be taken into consideration and appropriate modifications being put in place in terms of fairness and the ability to adequately demonstrate learning.  Consequences will be both reasonable and consistently applied.

Policy

In order to encourage, develop and applaud the practice of appropriate time management skills the following will apply in he evaluation of student assignments.

-assignment are expected to be submitted on the due date.

-5% bonus (applied to the final mark) will be applied tot hose assignments submitted on the due date.

-for every day that an assignment is not submitted for evaluation a late penalty of 5% will be deducted from the final assigned evaluation. (e.g. final mark of 75% with submission of an assignment being 2 days late will be :  (75% - [5% x 2] = 7.5 = 75-7.5 = 68.5%).

-if an assignment is submitted beyond a 5-day limit then the assignment is assessed a '0%.'

-incomplete assignments will be evaluated with the same late submission criteria being applied.

-any work on an assignment that is submitted within the 5-day late period will be evaluated.

The following process will apply in order to promote clarity in terms of understanding the objectives of the assignment and the evaluative criteria.

-parents and students will receive clear directions along with timelines of each long-term assignment.

-evaluative criteria will also be clearly stated by which the assignment will be assessed.

-a tear-off section will be signed by the parent and returned to the teacher in order that we are all aware of the completion dates and evaluation criteria that will be applied to the assignment.

-if an assignment is late - there will be a form letter sent home to the parent advising them of this fact.

-in the case of extenuating circumstances (illness or other reasonable case) the parent should inform the school so that reasonable extensions are applied.

It must be understood that for extended and/or habitual failure to meet deadlines the following consequences would normally apply:

-parental contact re: patterns and strategies designed to promote greater attention to academic success will automatically be put in place.

-academic assessment/success will take priority over participation in extra-curricular activities.

-the student will not be considered to participate in excursions or activities beyond the school.

-remedial sessions are always in place -- it will be the responsibility of the student to attend.

-loss of privileges such as school teams/extra-curricular teams and activities, dances, etc.

This policy is designed to clarify expectations and encourage students to perform to their potential and take on the responsibilities that we expect from them regarding their role as a student at Hazel McCallion Senior Public School.

TEXTBOOKS AND SUPPLIES

The required text books will be made available to each student.  It is the student's responsibility to take care of the books and ensure that they are returned in good condition.  Students will be required to replace lost or damaged books.   Basic supplies of paper, pencils, workbooks, etc. will not be provided by the school.

LIBRARY RESOURCE CENTRE

The Library Resource Centre offers opportunities for students to access information in a variety of ways.  Our collection is accessible electronically through our Columbia Systems data base.  Students will receive training on its use and the use of our print, video and electronic information.  Our Readers' Corner will provide an area for selection of literature and quiet reading.  The area is open for student access both at lunch time and after school.  Students will be encouraged to join our Media Club and play a role in running the room effectively for their peers.

TRIP POLICY

The Peel Board of Education encourages and endorses school excursions as program extensions and enrichment opportunities.   The educational value and impact on lifelong learning is immeasurable.  Hazel McCallion Senior Public School offers a variety of overnight excursions, day trips and special activities.  Many of these have been offered since the school's inception in 1992.

Each student is limited to 1 major trip during the school year.  It must be understood that our students must be in good standing both academically and behaviourally before participating in an off-property program.  In order to participate in any field trip students must satisfy the following two conditions.

1.    Excellent behaviour - showing respect for self and others.
2.    Academic subjects must be up-to-date and satisfy required criteria.

Students who have incomplete or overdue assignments will be removed from trips and parents contacted.  The decision to remove a student from a trip will be dependent on teacher input to the administrative staff.
