School Council Meeting Minutes Wednesday February 16, 2005
Attendees: Wayne Jones (Principal), Kathryn Wigham (Vice-Principal), Alex Tucker, Narendra Sambhi, Shirley Chow, Maggie Kaman, Dean Dacko, Veronica Omas-as, Huzaima Afzaz, Annie Gunpat and Nikita Malhotra (for Student Parliament portion)
1.1 Welcome Remarks and Approval of Minutes - Dean Dacko Dean welcomed everyone, apologized for the cancelled meeting last month and wished everyone a Happy New Year. The minutes from November 2004 were reviewed and approved by all those in attendance.
1.2 Student Parliament Update – Nikita Malhotra During the first two terms HMC raised $4,500, but we still need more money for graduation. We plan on holding another dance for Grad. On-line magazine provides more information on the Grad.
Student parliament meets every day 4. There will be a change in direction of Student Parliament. Teacher reps and Mrs K. Wigham met today to discuss the Constitution, Roles of Student Parliament and Leadership Training, and Code of Conduct.
1.3 Principal’s Message – Wayne Jones HMC has been very busy since our last meeting. The Camp Tawingo trip came back last week and was highly successful. Camp Tawingo is an outdoor education program run by the Phys Ed department. We also had four ski trips/skating activities that were highly successful. In addition, HMC had some exciting assemblies and guests. We try to have a wide variety of events. Each month has a theme, for example, anti-bullying.
A negative incident happened today after the girls basketball game with Lisgar Middle School. At the end of the game, approximately 4:20p.m., three of our students sprayed pepper spray in the school lobby. The police were called and all students, parents and staff members were asked to remain in the gym until the air cleared. One of the school’s custodians reported difficulty breathing and was treated by paramedics at the scene. None of the students were harmed and police will be continuing their investigation. Mr. Jones sent a letter to all parents about this incident the following day.
The school choir was scheduled to participate in the Kiwanis festival today but unfortunately, they were unable to attend due to the bus cancellation today. We hope to reschedule for Friday afternoon. The Jazz Band will be participating in the festival on Saturday and the Senior Band on Monday. Job Shadowing Day will be on February 25th and report cards will be going home on March 11th, 2005.
1.4 Staffing and Enrolment – Wayne Jones Staffing for all schools in Peel is based on a formula. The number of students determines the number of teachers. Projected enrollment for 2005/2006 school year will decline by 50 students across all three grades. We currently have 50.7 staff and next year it will be 48.4, therefore loosing 2.3 staff members. We need to reposition some staff. The impact is the difficult process of 2.3 staff leaving but we anticipate it will be through attrition. We hope to retain most of the staff.
In Peel, a strike vote was taken and the result is the teachers will be in a position to strike or exercise job action. We anticipate nothing will happen prior to March Break. After March Break we are unsure. Contingency plans will be co-ordinated by the Peel Board.
1.5 EQAO – Wayne Jones Mr. Jones reviewed and discussed the results of the EQAO testing for HMC students. We also looked at the provincial levels and concluded HMC students performed very well in all three categories of Reading, Writing and Math.
1.6 Winter Break 2005 – Wayne Jones The Ministry of Education usually proposes a school calendar each year and the Peel Board of Education adopts it for the following school year. For the school year 2005/2006, the Ministry has scheduled the winter break period starting December 19, 2005 and returning to school January 2, 2006. The Peel Board wants to modify the winter break so the last day of school is December 23, 2005 and returning to school on January 9, 2006. The Board is looking for direction from parents and school councils. The school council voted to support the motion to move to a modified winter break.
1.7 Parent Voice in Education - Dean Dacko The provincial government is looking to set up an infrastructure for parents to have a voice in education. Dean distributed copies of the “Parent Voice in Education Project Discussion Guide”. Deadline for response form submissions is February 25, 2005. Co-chair Masood Khan represented HMC at the Parent Voice meeting at the Board Office.
1.8 Fundraising: survey results – Kathryn Wigham The parent survey on proposed fundraising activities was handed out. There was not a large response but the consensus was chocolate sales is the best choice in terms of the amount of dollars raised and the amount of work involved in this fund-raising event. A motion was taken in favour of chocolate sales, none opposed.
1.9 Parent Professional Development: survey results Usually these events are not much success unless we target a specific group within the school for example, special needs students. The Peel Board holds a board-wide parent conference in the spring and it is usually sold out. The council will be looking for more information for those interested in attending.
