Sounds of Heart and Soulz ‘Pierce’ the Air at Pearson Airport
By:
Sarah Simpson and Erin Worgan, with input from Mr.Ferrin
You may remember us as the girls in red and black, or the ones who sang
those jazzy numbers at the Winter Celebration. We have worked extremely hard
on Monday nights and Thursdays all year long to dazzle you with an enjoyable
finger-snappin’, toe-tappin’ performance. It all began in early September
with the first challenge for all of us: getting into Heart and Soulz. From
then on we had to work together as a group learning scales, vocal jazz
techniques, and learning how to blend in two-part or three-part harmony.
Finally, after countless hours of rehearsal with Mr.Ferrin, we were ready to
put on a show! This past Monday, we travelled to Pearson International Airport in Toronto where we dazzled holiday travellers with our sounds. Each year, Pearson runs a program where school music ensembles are invited to share their music and brighten the spirits of people in line-ups and waiting around the airport. We performed twice in two different airport terminals and we were happy to see travelers singing along to the Christmas carols and smiling joyfully. It was a good thing that we had a lot of volume because we had to project our voices across the vast terminal lobbies. Afterwards we were exhausted and also hoarse from all of the performing, but we can all agree that we had a spectacular time. The manager of Terminal 3 Operations came over to personally congratulate us on an enjoyable show, and to say that he could hear us from the other end of the terminal! Before we left, Mr.Ferrin was already asked if he’d bring us back next year. If we’re lucky, maybe we could be the “in-flight entertainment” on a flight to Hawaii!
