Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire

By: Mei Yi Pan and Jackie Spector, Freelance writers

On Friday November 18, 2005, the much anticipated movie-of-the-year Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire hit theatres. Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, the fourth in the popular series has been a smash hit making over US$100 million in North America and almost US$200 million world wide, in only two days! This even beat “Star Wars Episode III – Revenge of the Sixth” which was released earlier this year! Theatres all over the world have been sold out on tickets. Some even dressed up for this occasion, wearing robes and scarves of the Gryffindor house.

As an extremely successful series, there were high expectations for the fourth movie. Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire has met most of them, but of course there were still a few flaws.  An example is Dumbledore played by Michael Gambon who replaced the original Dumbledore played by Academy award winner Richard Harris, who tragically died from Hodgkins disease. Michael Gambon won’t be winning any academy awards for this performance. “The new Dumbledore is not what I imagined in my mind. The one in the first two movies was perfect,” stated Erica Lix a student at Hazel.

This adventure starts off with a young wizard named Harry Potter who is about to start his 4th year at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Hogwarts has been chosen to play host to the legendary event, the Triwizard Tournament, in which 1 representative from each school, Hogwarts, Durmstrang, and Beauxbatons must compete in a series of tasks to move on to the next round. They must write their names on a piece of parchment and enter their names in the goblet of fire and it will decide who is worthy enough to compete in the tournament. Harry’s name has been placed in the goblet anonymously and now has to face these challenges along with Cedric Diggory, Victor Krum and Fleur Delacour. Eternal Glory awaits the student who wins the tournament. With these dangerous tasks upon them, something even more treacherous arises. Voldemort’s Death Eaters are gaining strength by the minute and are preparing themselves for the return of their master. Will Voldemort succeed and rise again, or is Harry going to stop him once and for all? With the nuisance of school work, the tournament and Voldemort, will Harry be able to handle this much pressure?

Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire is a great movie mixed with some romance, comedy and action bundled together. It is the first PG-13 movie in the series because it contains frightening scenes which may not be suitable for young children. It is an action packed film, which also contains many laughs to indulge the dark moments. Along with its excellent cast, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, is a must see movie and will not disappoint you despite the fact that it had to be crammed into 2 hours 37 minutes.
