Hazel Senior Girls Volleyball Team Prepares For the Season Ahead. Coach Tune Gives the Quest an Inside Look at How She Thinks the Team Will Do By: Alex Blake AB of the Quest asked- Are there a lot of new players on the team? Coach Tune- There are some returning players on team, but most of our players are new, making it challenging to prepare the team for their first game. AB of the Quest asked- What are your goals for the season? Coach Tune- My goal for the season would have to be to make the playoffs. AB of the Quest asked- At this stage, how good is the team in comparison with last year’s team? Coach Tune- I would have to say that, despite having mostly new players on the team, we have a better team this year than we had last year. AB of the Quest asked- Do you think that the team has bonded well enough by themselves or have the coaches intervened and helped out in the bonding process? Coach Tune- I feel that the team has bonded well enough on their own, since some of our players have played together on other sports teams, or have been together in other activities within the school, but both Ms. Thompson and I have encouraged bonding through group work and group development. AB of the Quest asked- If you were competing in your first game tomorrow, would you say that the team is ready, or do they need some more training? Coach Tune- If the team had to play tomorrow I don’t think they would be ready, or be able to compete to their best abilities. They still have to work hard on skill development, servicing properly, defensive tactics and team strategies. Thankfully we still have 7 more practices before our first game next week. AB of the Quest asked- Who do you think will be the teams to beat this year? Coach Tune- Every year the competition changes, but I personally feel that we will be one of the strongest competitors in the league. AB of the Quest asked-The girls volleyball team has been one of the girls teams at Hazel that has never won a Peel championship. Compared to the girls basketball team that has won Peel 5 years in a row, and girls soccer where we've won South Peel 7 years in a row, we know that we have great girl athletes in the school, so what do you think has prevented us from succeeding in the volleyball category? Is it that volleyball is harder to grasp, or is it because those who are good at other sports don’t bother trying out, or is it something else? Coach Tune-The reason that the team hasn’t won in so many years is because in volleyball, unlike some other sports, you have to develop 'new' skills throughout practices and during the season. In soccer, or basketball for example, those who tryout already have developed some of the skill and talents necessary to excel in those sports. Therefore, volleyball is like a brand new skill and therefore it takes time to master.
