Our Second Fundraising Year is Another Successful One. A Recap of the Week

 By: Julie Anne Mendoza

Terry Fox day has come and gone, but what now?  Here’s a little behind the scenes look at how everything is coming together at the end and what on earth is happening now.

The major question running around everyone’s mind is, “when’s the money going to the Terry Fox Foundation?”  The answer… as soon as it can.  The money from the coin jar and the pledges all has to be counted and rolled, a hefty job for a few staff members.  Once all those coins are packed up and ready to go, they are being shipped to the foundation via Purolator.  The sooner it’s rolled, the sooner it gets there, so volunteering to help out after school isn’t a bad idea.

Our school raised a total of $8,300 but where did it all come from?  The majority of the $8,300 was collected through the pledges, a new addition to the fundraising venture this year.  A quick congrats to classes 6I, 7D and 8K who brought in the most money in their grade levels, each of them winning a pizza party.  Overall, students raked in a lot of cash with these pledge forms, although some grade levels, namely the grade 8’s, brought in more money in total than the others.  Because of their great success, pledge forms will be sent out again next year, in the hope that we can collect even more money for the foundation.

Mr. Ferrin, the guy behind this operation, was blown away by the amount of money we brought in.  He’s extremely proud of the massive amounts of funds we collected, especially since we surpassed the near impossible goal of $6543.21.  Though, I doubt we would’ve met the goal if we didn’t have the incentive of seeing our teachers act like lunatics.  When asked about his opinion on the teacher stunts, Mr. Ferrin declared “To be honest, I was more focused on the overall goal than the teacher stunts”.

The last piece of the total raised had to with the sales made in the front foyer.  Chocolate bars (personalized Hazel chocolate bars) sold out pretty fast, and, according to Mr. Ferrin “there will be none left by the time this article comes out on the online”.  Wrist bands however, are still on sale and unfortunately did not sell as well as the chocolate bars.  Perhaps it was due to the fact that they are last year’s news, or maybe it’s just because eating chocolate is a lot more satisfying than wearing a rubber wristband.

All in all, Terry Fox day was an amazing success, we saw some stunts, ate some chocolate and, most importantly, we did our part in helping find the cure for cancer.  Maybe next year, we can raise even more money, bringing us closer and closer to the cure, which will, once and for all, bring an end to this disease.
