On March 4, 2006 the cheerleaders of Hazel McCallion competed in the Regional Cheerleading Championships at the University of Guelph. When the Hurricanes arrived at the University everybody was overwhelmed to see how big the venue was as compared to what they were used to. The University contained two gyms, one as a practice area for teams to run through their routine before their performance, and one in which the actual competition took place.

The main competition gym was enormous! There were 6 large sets of bleachers which were packed with a very enthusiastic audience, an audience that became more and more anxious as the teams prepared to show off their routines.

Meanwhile, the Hurricanes, participating in the junior level 3 division, were just as anxious as the crowd. Arthur Public School cheerleaders were the Hurricanes only competition for the day. In this regional competition things were a little different as compared to other competitions. In this competition, teams only got one chance to showcase their skills and talents before the judges decided their ranking, something that increased the pressure to perform well.

When the time came (see video), Hazel’s overall routine was outstanding. Although it contained a few, minor errors, H.M.C’s cheerleaders pulled it together and completed an overall amazing performance. With dances, tumbles, complicated stunts, and big, happy smiles, H.M.C did a wonderful job on their performance. Based on the size of the trophy they won, the judges must have agreed with them.

Congratulations to the H.M.C. Hurricanes for placing #1 in the junior division for The Regional Cheerleading Championships! H.M.C. is very proud of all your accomplishments. We’re looking forward to your next performance. Keep it up!
