Another season has come to a triumphant close for the 2005-2006 Senior Girls basketball team.  Starting with tryouts back in December, it became clear this team would be a force to be reckoned with.  Experiencing little trepidation at Thomas Street’s Tip-Off tournament back in January, the girls began demonstrating a greater competitive edge, improved skills and court sense, and most importantly an unmeasureable determination!

The season continued with some scheduling bumps in the road, but through it all, the girls remained calm, confident and best of all, they remained undefeated!  Bringing them to the Play-Offs, with the best seasonal record, the team first faced Lisgar in the Quarter-Final round winning by a small margin, moving on to the Semi-Finals against last year’s main competition Thomas Street.  Winning yet again, the girls advanced to the Championship round against Dolphin, a team that proved to be a notable adversary, challenging the girls and making them work together to eke out a 21-18 victory in the final. For the 7th year in a row the Hazel senior girls were awarded another South Peel Championship Title.

These 12 girls practiced, earned, and fully deserved the Championship title, a victory that rewarded them with an achievement and acknowledgement in HMC’s basketball dynasty reputation!  Without their time, effort and personal sacrifices, this season wouldn’t have been so successful.  The girls would like to acknowledge and thank all the parents and staff who game after game came out and supported the team – THANK YOU – your support was greatly appreciated and did not go unnoticed.  Congratulations Champions: Jasmine, Allie, Alexis, Christie, Melissa, Salma, Kayla, Sabrina, Desiree, Jen, Daina, and Amanda!

 Junior Girls Wrap Up

After an interesting start to their day, the Junior Girls basketball team traveled to The Valleys for an all day tournament just before March break. The girls were prepared for anything, however, they only longed for one thing - the championship title.  After a slow start, losing their first round-robin game by the slimmest of margins, it became clear that they required a more aggressive and dominant presence on the court.  Keeping their eye on the prize, the girls stepped up to the challenge in true Hazel fashion. They returned to tight defense, solid offense, and intensive rebounding, to eventually take the reigns of every game and they duplicated the feat achieved by their senior girls to bring the South Peel championship title home to Hazel.

In the true essence of teamwork, every single player played a significant role to determine the final outcome of the day, and, best of all they demonstrated the quality most sought after at Hazel…quality sportsmanship.  These Hazel athletes represented themselves and the school with great pride, showing what a truly awesome school McCallion is.  Great season ladies!  You should be proud of your accomplishment!

The trophy is proudly displayed on the desk in the front office, and the pennant will take it’s place next to all the other achievements Hazel athletes continue to acquire…CONGRATULATIONS!
