The Toronto Argos Dropped in to Play some Hoops for a Good Cause…Unfortunately, they lost to the Hazel McCallion Boys 74-66

The good news was…the game made $400 for charity

 By: Rebecca Babcock, Staff writer

On Wednesday May 4th, 2004 four Argonauts football players teamed up against the Hazel McCallion boys basketball team. Noel Prefontaine (alias Pre),  Argonauts Public relations officer Jason, alias Sui, Orlando Steinauer (O), and Michael Fletcher (Fletch) were the four Argonauts who took time out of their personal schedules to come to McCallion to play against the boys for charity. Orlando brought his young daughter Kiana with him to watch the game. (Seen in the picture).

The Argos arrived with only 4 players and added the Junior Boys from Hazel to their roster. With the two sides complete, it had the makings of a great game.  And what a game it was. Excitement was in the air, not only for the players, but for the 100 or so fans (who paid $4.00 each) watching from the sidelines. Shots went in, passes were intercepted, and there was a lot of talent displayed on the court. Even Pre provided some much needed humour with some big time trash talking on the court. The size was a little hard for the Hazel boys to handle at first and Mrs. Soligo, who was one of the referees for the game said, “the boys were bouncing off the Argos.”

The game consisted of the regular four quarters and believe it or not, Hazel McCallion always had the lead! The first quarter was dominated by the boys of McCallion and they led 24-10. During the second quarter Hazel extended its lead to 15 and, at the half, they led  48-33.

Even though the game was competitive, the Argos did have some time to play around with the crowd. During the game Pre fired a baseball cap to the spectators which was rapidly caught by one of our own Junior Girls, Bethany Foster.

After the half, the Argos came out running and gunning. They were now warmed up and they made an attempt to get back into the game. They actually closed the lead to 4 points and, at the end of 3 quarters, Hazel’s lead was now only 52-48. During the last quarter, the Argonauts tried to take the lead but the boys from Hazel hung on and won 74-66. What a way to end the year...with a great exhibition game that raised money for an Argos charity and a game that gave the boys a lasting memory.

After the game, every spectator was given the chance to get an autograph from the players and some even stayed for pictures. The Argos really enjoyed the game and came away impressed. After the game Noel Prefontaine said to the boys' coaches Ms. Scuccato and Mr. Riddell, “these boys are good. You should be very proud of them”.

All of Hazel is proud of them, not only for their playing abilities, but also for the fact that the school raised over $400 for an worthy Argos charity.
