Hurricane Boys enjoy another successful Season!

By: Emad Raza © 2002

The Hazel McCallion Hurricanes had major expectations going into this season. Everyone expected them to be a strong team, including the opposition. At the commencement of the season, their main objective, was to make sure to take out Thomas Street, and especially Dolphin, a team that would provide their main opposition throughout the year. Like Dolphin, who began the season by practicing in early September, the Hurricanes practiced hard in preparation for their first league game, an away game against none other than Dolphin.
Going into the game, they knew that this was he team to beat and that it would definitely be no walk in the park. The boys worked hard, and showed their skill, winning the first game, 25-21. After the relief of winning the first game, the boys seemed to play an uninspired second game, and fell apart, losing 25-13. However, it is the history of Hazel McCallion teams to never give up. This year's edition was no exception. They rallied to win the final game, by a score of 15-7. The final point seemed to go on forever, by far the longest rally of the game.

After that game, the boys seemed to ride an amazingly high confidence level, which would definitely be necessary to get to the Finals at Rick Hansen on November 27th. The next contest was against Edenwood, also an away game. They went into the game, knowing that they were a much more skilled team then Edenwood, and got a bit cocky. At one point in the first game, the score was 20-7 and the boys started to relax. Coach Koruna, seeing a chance to get his other players some action, substituted two of six starting players. Hazel then showed their weak points as Edenwood went for the almost impossible comeback. But in the end, the boys pulled it out, and ended up winning 25-23. The second game was much more serious, and the Hurricanes made quick work of the opponents, winning 25-11. After this near collapse, the Canes were sure never to underestimate the opposition again.

The next game was against Thomas Street, a team that had given Hazel a load of problems during last years junior tournament. The guys knew that if they played hard and had won the match, they would be closer to securing first place in their division. For the first time in the season, the Hazel McCallion Hurricanes lost the opening game, 25-23. The atmosphere was becoming tense, and for the first time all season, they were really being pushed to the limit. They rebounded, winning the second game 25-21. In a tight third game, they won the match, proving once again that they could come through in the clutch. This was a real turning point in the season, showing to everyone that Hazel is capable of beating the best teams in the league, and would never let up. They secured first place with the victory.
The first and last home game of the regular season was against Lisgar, the only team in the division that they had yet to play. Lisgar came close in both of the two games, but the powerhouse Hurricanes proved to be too much to handle in the end for a clearly less skilled team. McCallion, with the victory had clinched first place in their division and guaranteed them a home playoff game against the 4th place team in the east division.
To continue their quest to be number one in Peel, the first place Canes entered a tournament at Rick Hansen S.S, featuring some of the province's best junior high school teams. Hazel's pool, included Holy Rosary, St. Marguerite's (the team that had beat the Canes the previous year in this tournament), E.J. James' junior team, and Meadowcrest, the defending provincial champions. Hazel made Holy Rosary look like fools, winning their games 25-8, and 25-13. They then played Meadowcrest, a team with great offensive skill. The teams split the two games, but Meadowcrest was awarded the win because of point spread differential. The Canes then also disposed of E.J. James quite swiftly, but ended the day 2nd in their pool (again because of point spread) and were forced to play in the 2nd place pool the next day at Fallingbrook. There, they defeated Williams Parkway, St. Marguerite's, and Thomas Street, to become Champions of the pool, and to get 5th place overall in the tournament.

The Hurricanes' first playoff game will took place on November 20th (a home game) against the 4th place team in the other division; Camilla. Camilla, coming from a weaker division, were clearly inferior to the Hurricane talent and they were dispatched 25-12 and 25-18, meaning that the Canes were off to the South Peel championship at Fallingbrook.
The Canes were now two steps away from winning it all. A victory in the South Peel Championships would guarantee them a chance to play for the Peel championships at Rick Hansen. The Canes were looking to win this game then go on to win the Peel Championship. The season also had more significance since this would be Coach Koruna's last season behind the bench. Mr. Koruna is in his last year of teaching, and his retirement will mean that Ms. Tolone, the assistant coach will take over the coaching of the volleyball team. The boys know the importance of making his last year a winning one. The team has worked hard, and deserves this trophy. No one can deny that are certainly is capable of winning it.
The Hazel McCallion Senior Boys volleyball team includes Sean Dinza, Emad Raza, Raman Judge, Jesse Wilson, Mohammed Habibzi, Morgan Cunningham, Andrew Rodo, Nathan Carter, Marc Girouard, Ben Amiraghassimi, Prabjeet Singh and Kyle Worgan (the only grade 7 on the team)
