Silver Birch Awards

On Thursday, May 22, a group of forty grade six students represented our school at the Silver Birch Awards Ceremony. Winners were selected in the fiction and non fiction categories by the students throughout Ontario.  We congratulate the winning authors, Eric Walters, who wrote the novel  “Camp X “and Karen Levine,  who wrote “Hana’s Suitcase.” We would also like to recognize Ms. Byrne who spent many hours working as a member of last summer’s provincial book selection committee. Seven students participated in the awards ceremony, which took place at Toronto Harbourfront in front of an audience of fifteen hundred screaming book lovers. Official sign carriers were Jennifer Green, Monika Tandon,  Amanda Narula,  and Stephanie Singh. Speakers who introduced authors with prepared remarks were Rebecca Babcock, Emily Chan,  and Samantha Varghese.  All ten grade six classes participated enthusiastically in this literacy program. The students would like to thank their teachers for including the Silver Birch Awards program in their grade six year.  Special gratitude is extended to our two parent volunteers, Mrs. Lily Supaul and Mrs. Susan Babcock, who accompanied us on the trip and also read the Silver Birch  books!  In addition, they wish to say thank you to their parents for encouraging them to read and making it possible  for them to obtain books from local libraries and to  purchase personal copies as keepsakes.
