Reality TV shows… Realistic?

By: Trisha Petrosoniak, Editor

“Hello, welcome to the Bachelor. Tonight, Aaron will have to face a very crucial decision… he will have to eliminate 10 of the 25 young women here tonight. By the end of this process, one may be able to win his heart.”

Like many other so-called Reality TV shows, the Bachelor and the Bachelorette have attracted millions of viewers to tune in to watch hearts be crushed and broken. Although these television shows are extremely popular, what everyone’s watching isn’t realistic!

How can you consider these shows realistic if the cameras are on you 24/7?!? Trista Rehn, the Bachelorette from 2003 says that she is relieved to spend time with Ryan, the man she eventually chose,  without the cameras, in the real world! Unlike life on the Bachelor or Bachelorette, it’s not humanly possible to date 25 people at once, in which the one chosen is basically forced to marry you 2 months later. Would you be 100% sure that the person you would choose would be the person you want to “spend the rest of your life” with?

There are probably many contestants on this show that will say they can picture a future with their “lover” but let’s be a little realistic here…they really have only known each other for a few weeks!! Many of these contestants may come on the show knowing what they want, but not knowing enough about whom they want.

The entertainment business tries really hard to air these “future hit” television shows, but they haven’t been completely successful. There may be many who watch the shows, which I guess is the ultimate goal…to create a huge profit, but they aren’t very successful in helping find the ‘best match’ for the Bachelor or Bachelorette! In fact, the record relationship so far has been between Aaron and Helen, a couple that met on the second season of the Bachelor. They only stayed together for 5 months! “Like those of us that turned in really felt that they found true love!!” If you were one of them that did, you need a good dose of reality…in the real world, not the ones fabricated by these reality freaks of network TV.

Sadly, although I hate to admit it, even though these reality type television shows may not be realistic as compared to our everyday life, they are still good fun to watch. I haven’t figured out how it could be a good experience to be on the show, but for now I guess it’s just satisfying…and addicting for me to watch!
