The Hamster Boys, The Bands and The Choir all turn in stellar performances at the Kiwanis festival By: Jennifer Piggott, Staff writer In Ms. Pearson’s portable, 8 boys, all aged eleven years old, sit and learn. But sitting isn’t what they’re known for… they’re now known for dancing! What started out as a physical education assignment ended up being an award winning performance. These 8 boys came up with a jazzy dance routine that made them the pride and joy of their coach, Ms. Mills. “They basically gave up every lunch hour to come and practice,” she said. The first time they were seen was at Mr. Stone’s Retirement Assembly. The performance was a little rusty, but over the next few months, they improved a lot, and in March, they managed to win a trophy for the Most Promising Level of Participation at the Kiwanis Dance Festival. But they weren’t the only Hazel group competing in the Kiwanis Festival. The Senior Choir and Senior Band both did exceptionally well at the Festival. The choir placed first out of three groups, from Hazel, Frenchman’s Bay, and Camilla. Camilla had just been beaten by the McCallion girls in the basketball finals, so it was really a double victory of sorts for many of the choir members. After lots and lots of practicing during lunch hours and in the early hours of the morning, Ms. Ward, the director of the McCallion Senior Band, can proudly hang a frame in her room that confirms the fact the ban won second place. All the groups played in other festivals or competitions, but the Hamster Boys was the group that received the most recognition. To go along with their placing as “most promising performers”, they also earned a one hundred-dollar scholarship, which they donated to our school. The boys have accomplished a lot, and we at the Quest wish them good luck in their future dancing careers.
