2002 Hazel McCallion Girls Volleyball Team By: Mrs. Tune, Coach © 2002
The volleyball season for the junior girls team was very successful. The girls competed in the South Peel tournament at Hillside Sr. P.S. They played the round robin, and with each game improved tremendously. They advanced to the playoffs, where they faced the highly favoured home team, Hillside, in the semi-finals. They upset Hillside in 3 games to advance to the championships. The girls played against Edenwood Sr. P.S. for the gold medal. They fought hard, but lost the first game. In the second game, they played with a 'Never say die' attitude, beating Edenwood 27-26 in the best game of the tournament. They then played the third set of the match to determine who would bring home the championship. In a close match, the girls lost by just a few points. It was an excellent day for Hazel McCallion, and we look forward to next year's senior team. Congratulations girls! The senior girls competed in the South Peel League. They had a slow start to the season, losing a couple tight matches. The girls finished the season off with a victory against the undefeated Lisgar team. Unfortunately, it was not enough to move on to the playoffs. To finish the season off, the senior girls played in Edenwood's annual tournament, where the top teams from Peel, as well as teams outside of the region competed. The girls really showed their skill as they placed first in their pool by beating the number 3 and 4 teams in Peel. Hazel then beat a team from Milton handily. In the semi-finals, the girls lost a tight game to the eventual champions, a technically sound team from Georgetown. In the consolation match, Hazel beat the home team, Edenwood, to bring home the third place banner. It was a great season and the girls proved that they were one of the top teams in South Peel.
