Celebrity Role Models?…Not exactly the Best Choice to Make
By:
Diljot Chhina, Staff writer
Everyone loves to watch movies and dream that they could be a celebrity one day too. Many of us, see the glamorous side of show business. We think that celebrities are so rich and famous and that they are great role models for us. Except, if we look more closely, behind the scenes, that’s not at all true, for various reasons. There are so many bad things that celebrities do, its making kids go the wrong way with their lives. Sure, there are many things that they do for the community and when we see them donating money or talking at a conference to raise money for drug awareness, they can look kind-hearted on the outside, but they are much different from that on the inside. Jennifer Aniston, for example, an actress from the hit show Friends practically starved herself to be slim again after she had her child. Is this giving a positive message to kids that, in order to lose weight, they need to starve themselves? There are a growing number of actors that have been arrested for drug possession, been seen with prostitutes, gotten divorced numerous times, and acted rudely and impolitely to fans and photographers. These so called role models are showing people that this sort of attitude and behaviour are okay, but really, they aren’t at all.
There are those that say
the kids who repeat the actions of their role models are at fault but it’s not
the kid’s fault. These kids who follow the actions of their role mode don’t
know any better. If
they
think It’s weird though, that some actors send a message to kids that they should not take drugs or lose weight in dangerous ways yet they themselves do that. Aren’t they just contradicting themselves? Aren’t they being hypocrites? On the positive side, it’s nice how celebrities like to help charities. Whenever a celebrity is on a game show, the money is always given towards a worthy charity. Many celebrities also speak out against wars, and they promote world peace. If they just take away their negative actions and increased the positive contributions they make, then they would be considered as much better role models for everyone. I think kids should look up to more educated and professional people like doctors or lawyers. Being an actor or any celebrity is nice but the chances of becoming one are very low. Plus, the extra fame increases the chances involvement in drugs and for scandal. Very few make it to the celebrity or star category. Hollywood can ruin a person’s life. In a perfect world, if the celebrity is really good and doesn’t do bizarre things, then a child should take him or her as a role model. You don’t many of those people though. It’s a lot safer and more practical to look up to those that ‘worked’ at their education and their life to get a decent job. Being a star is glamorous, but put it in perspective. Chances are you’re not going to make it and so, live your life following a role model or models that live life honestly and that work hard. If you follow these two things…the rest will come easy and you’ll become famous… in the eyes of your family and friends.
