Canadian Musicians...Shut out at the Grammy Awards!

By: Nicole Paserin, Editor

This year, on the 23rd of February, to be exact, there were many Grammy award nominees as well as winners. From all over the world, east to west, north to south. But did you ever happen to notice, where the actual winners came from? Oh, hang on a second… “and the nominees are… and the winner is…”. After much of this routine continually repeated the audience noticed that not many Canadians had the opportunity to stand up from his or her chair, walk up onto the stage, and receive their award during the 45th annual Grammy awards.

Of all the Grammy awards that were given out this year, not many artists to receive the award happened to be Canadian. Simply a coincidence, or is there more to it than that? Avril Lavigne, for example, received 6 nominations this year and, in the end, left the hall with no award in her hands. How can a person be nominated 6 times, and be not awarded??? Perhaps there was something more going on then the usual annual awarding of Grammy awards.

This year, there were many who received awards, including Norah Jones, six time winner, Bruce Springsteen, 3 time winner, Dixie Chicks, 3 time winners, Coldplay, 2 time winners, John Mayer, No Doubt, Sheryl Crow, Mary Blige, Usher, Stevie Wonder, Take Six, Erykah Badu, India Arie, Nelly, Missy Elliott, OutKast, Eminem, Faith Hill,

Johnny Cash, Alan Jackson, Tony Bennett, Bobby Ozuna, James Poyser, Tony Bennett, Foo Fighters, Chaka Khan, The Funk Brothers, Glenn Standridge, Raphael Saadiq, Ashanti, Killer Mike, Kelly Rowland, Lee Ann Womack, Third Day, Eartha, Carol Cymbala and the Brooklyn Tabernacle, Choir, Maná, Celia Cruz, Grupo Mania, Joan Sebastian, Emilio Navaira, Nickel Creek, Mary Youngblood, Rubén Blades, Riders In The Sky, Tom Chapin, Maya Angelou, Marc Shaiman, Scott Wittman, Howard Shore, Randy Newman, Roger Sanchez, Michael Tilson Thomas, Joseph Jennings, Chanticleer, Sir John Tavener, André Previn, The Clash, Robin Williams, Santana, Michelle Branch, and Norman Brown.

So, with all winners, how is it that barely any of them were Canadian? Why is it that so many other people received rewards, although they were slightly less deserving. Like the figure skating incident during the Olympics, with Jamie Sale and David Pelletier, perhaps it wasn’t exactly fair. Although several well deserving artists received their Grammy awards, there are still several who people agree that there are others who didn’t receive awards that they worked very hard for…many of them being Canadian.
