Spiderman

by Ashley Berghart

It all started, way back in 1962 with Marvel Enterprise and their debut release of the Spider-Man comic books. The readers were overwhelmed by this amazing fantasy. Peter Parker, a boy no different than you or me, gets bitten by a spider, and gets his whole life flipped upside-down. The affects of the spider’s bite give him spider like talents and abilities and he decides to devote his life to fighting crime. Peter Parker becomes the Amazing Spider-Man.

As mentioned, Peter develops many abilities such as, the abilities to spin webs and to climb up walls and he also acquires superhuman strength. The public was immediately drawn to this marvelous creature, who, when he wasn’t wearing his costume, was just any normal guy. It was a change in the flow of superheroes. Batman, another classic, was no common man. He was rich and had a heck of a happy life. Superman was also happy, and unlike Peter Parker, had a love life. Nobody thought that any ordinary dude could become so strong and powerful; therefore, Spider-Man was an instant success.

Among the workers in the Marvel Enterprise was a man by the name of Stan Lee; he was the first to unveil The Amazing Spider-Man to his readers. Spider-Man was the first and one of the only teenagers to actually become a superhero and not just ‘the sidekick’. Not only was Peter Parker a teenager, he had the normal amount of a teenager’s problems-love life, self-esteem and not to mention he had his fair share of bullies. This made the superhero even more popular because the readers could relate to Peter’s problems.

By the 1990’s Spider-Man, along with many other superheroes, had become so admired that Marvel Enterprise decided to release a line of superhero toys, among the most popular, superhero action-figures. Not long after Marvel signed a contract, which enabled them to create T.V shows or movies based on their superheroes. That’s where the Spider-Man movie comes into play.

Released in May 2002, Spider-Man shocked the nation. From its catchy theme songs to the mind-boggling graphics, people from all over fled to movie theatres to catch the flick that would become one of the box office’s most prosperous movies.

Spider-Man/ Peter Parker (played by Toby McGuire) was your typical everyday teenager in love, but barely being able to scratch by (keyword being: was). While at a trip to the science museum, Parker is bitten by a spider which had astonishing abilities. At first, it just seemed like any normal bite, but Peter soon begins to realize his powers. Meanwhile, a villain is being created, by the name the Green Goblin. As any normal villain, he begins to create havoc in the city and destroys the lives of many people, without remorse. As your mainstream superhero, Spider-Man is determined to save the people and his showdown with the Green Goblin commences.

This movie’s got it all, intrigue, romance and action. It makes you want to become Spider-Man or the Green Goblin. It’s just one of those movies where you want to stand up at the end and scream ‘Encore. Encore!’ Spider-Man had amazing graphics and left me feeling like I was standing on the top of one of those buildings; it was so real that it actually left me terrified of heights.

Even though the graphics and the dialogue were both extremely well done, the end of the movie left me thinking, what the hell did that mean???!!!! The whole movie, Peter is in love with Mary-Jane, and I don’t want to spoil it for the people who haven’t seen it but, she when she finally reaches the point where she is ready to reciprocate his affection, what does he do? Well, Parker walks off and uses the old ‘We can be friends’ routine. Explain it to me please, why would the writers choose to end the movie this way? It has no closure and it’s not what the people expected to hear, leaving them with questions that probably now haunt them day and night. If you’ve liked a girl that much¼and for that long…go out with her, it’s as simple as that.
